The other comment has good ideas, all of which I agree with. I'm guessing that you're going to have someone with you in the airports, but it would probably still be a good idea to commit to memory the flight numbers/gates that you have to deal with, in case something strange happens.
Also, a big thing, especially coming into the US - make sure you know what is and isn't allowed in carry-ons, and all that sort of thing. This will be in regards to leaving as well, because some of their rules change rather often, as to what you can and can't have, and it's just a good idea to be prepared.
The mp3 player is a very good idea, or at least something that you can listen to - airports can be particularly noisy and disconcerting, and just being able to disappear into a world of your own if you have a long layover, as well as if you don't feel chatty on the plane ride. It also helps me to have music when I want to sleep, because it's something I can control, as opposed to all the other things that are going on, while on a plane.
