Summary: Sesshoumaru is sent upon a divine hunt.  What shall be his prize?

She did not turn her face away from the stars at his approach.  It was unnecessary and most likely unwanted.  He knew she was aware of him even though his advancement made no sound to notify her of his presence, not even the lightest rustle of his fine silks.  Tilting her head slightly she waited for him to speak.  Distractedly she wondered if he would start with a demand or a greeting.

“Why have you summoned me Mother?”

Ah, a demand.  Not at all surprising coming from one so exacting.  The corner of her lips tugged up in the shadow of a smile.  He was so much like his father.  Strong, bold, and yet lacking all of his sympathy and warmth.  He had been such a serious pup, always so intense, so competitive.  Too many sacrifices had been made, there had been too much striving and pushing.  He had grown to be cold and bitter.    The little one, Rin, had told her that Sesshoumaru was lonely and that cold and lonely where bad.  She could not allow that to continue.

“I have been communing with the stars my son.” She finally turned to face him, her face as empty and unreadable as his.  It was so hard to know, was he happy?  Was he sad?  She desired his happiness.  It was what all mother’s wished for their sons, no matter the cost.

“What do their prophetic dances have to do with this one?”  He flicked the long hair form his shoulder as he turned from her to look towards the sky.
“This Sesshoumaru creates his own destiny.”

The Lady of the west chuckled softly at his youthful defiance.  So he would challenge even the stars.  His arrogance knew no bounds.  “Be that as it may, it never dose harm for one to be advised of the ebb and flow of fate.”

The young dog snorted in contempt as he glared at the shimmers of light out of his reach in the heavens.  “I should subscribe to fate now?”

“They speak of a boon for you, a great treasure.  That is if you choose to claim it.”

Her sons’ eyes suddenly brightened with interest.   “A boon of fate?  Is it one of great power?”

Greedy little pup.  “The greatest of powers my son, for this is the greatest of treasures.  But, you must earn it.”

Sesshoumaru frowned and stepped away from the Lady of the West.  Already his excitement and impatience was building.  A new strength, a new power.  It had to be his.  “What must I do?”

“You must hunt.  Entertain the stars with a merry chase.  And that which you catch…” She took hold of his chin to force his eyes to meet her own.  “you must keep.”

“Hey watch where you’re going!” Kagome staggered trying to regain her footing as hare darted ricocheted off her leg and darted away almost entangling itself with her limbs in its haste.

“Wow.  I wounded what spooked him.”  The young miko looked around peering into the depths of the dark forest surrounding her.  She shivered in apprehension as the eerie silence of the night suddenly felt less tranquil.  “H… hello?  Is someone out there?”

A bush to her left shivered in answer and she gasped jumping back grabbing for the bow she still carried on her shoulder.  “Who’s there?!”
The foliage went still in answer.  “If that is you Shippo you better come out!  This isn’t funny!”  Only eerie silence answered her.  Drawing an arrow from her quiver she sidled up to the bush swallowing to keep her heart from beating out of her chest.  “I’m warning you. I‘ve got the power to purify and I’m not afraid to use it.”

Suddenly the bush erupted in a swell of leaves and fur as a herd of deer leapt from the undergrowth and barreled past her.  Yelping Kagome threw herself out of their path almost getting trampled by the wild animals.  They rushed past her in a maddened stream, does and fawns leaping over scurrying rabbits and squirrels.  The air was thick with their panic and desperation filling Kagome with dread.  Whatever had sent them into such a terror could not be far behind.

Her heart beat thundered loudly in her ears drowning out the sound of breaking branches and snapping twigs.  She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck rising.  She could feel it closing in on her, determined, hungry, a predator.

‘Run!’ her instincts screamed and before she knew it she was.  Leaping over fallen logs and dodging around trees she didn’t dare look back at the thing that she knew was behind her.  Branches snagged at her hair and clothes, sharp twigs tore at her face leaving burning trails on her cheeks and still she ran faster.  The village was just ahead.  She just had to break through the tree line and her friends would be able to come to her aid.  She would be safe.  Just past that tree…

Suddenly the world pitched beneath her as her toe caught on a tree root hidden in the deep shadows of the path.  A yelp tore its way from her throat as she caught herself with her hands, tearing the flesh of her palms.  She panted trying to slow her heart and breathing as she listened the almost silent foot falls of the predator behind her, closing in.  Slowly she turned her head to look over her shoulder.  A sob of relief tore form her throat.
“Sesshoumaru-sama.”  Stumbling to her feet she tried to rub the tears and dirt from her cheeks with the sleeve of her kimono.  “You scared me.  For a moment there I felt like I was being hunted.”

The inuyoukai closed the distance between them, his golden eyes shining with a strange intensity.  “You were.”
