in the currents and the tides

You would have told him you love him, would have touched him and kiss him and never let go. But you know it’s not what he needs; you know this is not what you want for him.

He has an almost perfect life with his almost perfect wife and almost perfect house with the white picket fence and prized rose bushes, the matching aprons and sparkly pots and pans and the never-ending rows of framed photos lining their wall-papered wall. He has a bright light ahead of him, a fantastic future waiting to behold.

And even though you love him so much it takes the breath out of you, you stand down.

You kiss him on the lips, a chaste kiss that whispers goodbye and I wish you have a good life. And then you let him go, let him walk out the door.

The lock clicks, you close your eyes. Moonlight shines over you. You drift on.
