I REALLY didn't see this one coming

Uhh... some of you may want to read this. Bearing in mind that this is from VARIETY, and not a dodgy horror fanboy site.

"Spider-Man 2" director Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are reteaming to produce a remake of the cult hit "The Evil Dead" through Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture of Raimi, Tapert ( Read more... )

It really, really looks that way. It's still early days though, so this could get aborted when fans start rioting in the streets :)

When I first read this late last night, I was speechless. I wanted to comment, but didn't know what to say. I did a google search on 'evil dead remake' and quite a few results came up. I read every single article I could find on it, only to realize I had been rereading the same few paragraphs over and over again. I am still at a loss of words. I don't know even what to make of it. I always thought that I'd be stoked beyond believeability that Sam, Rob and Bruce are teaming up to make a fourth Evil Dead, but I never considered the possibility that they would merely be producers. A fourth Evil Dead not helmed by Sam Raimi? Only a slight possibility of Bruce Campbell playing Ash? What the fuck is going on here? It won't be Evil Dead. The reason the entire Evil Dead trilogy works was due to two specific people doing two specific jobs (rather, they all pretty much did everything, so...). Regardless, if I don't see a Written & Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell, I honestly may not go out and see it. I don't want the ( ... )

I just had a sudden thought. You see, Raimi has always teased us, the audience, with the thought of doing Evil Dead 4. He knows if he made it, it would not only have a budget (thus practically defeating the purpose) but would be massively popular at the box office. He knows if Evil Dead 4 was greenlit, information would leak quite quickly and would then spread like wildfire over the internet. So what I'm thinking is maybe this Evil Dead remake is a distraction. Seriously, think about it for a second...what better way to do an Evil Dead 4 than pretend that you're doing something different? Not to mention it seems like a total Raimi/Campbell thing to do.

In repsonse to your initial thoughts... I completely agree, that's almost exactly how i felt. But I fear it'll be a lot worse than ash merely "passing the torch" and getting killed off... bruce is just too old and not mainstream enough, i am not even remotely keeping my hopes up that he'll even be in the film. They'll get some nub from "The O.C." or something. I'm sure bruce will have at least a cameo, but beyond that... who knows ( ... )

Everything I've found is either some stupid "CONTACT CELEBS!!!!!11" site, or porn websites that all bizarely use the keywords "contact sam raimi" and "evil dead".

To be honest, going by what i've heard so far, there really is going to be a huge cult uproar about this. There's bound to be a few manic fans out there who will get the chance to physically tell sam that this idea sucks, whether he "cares deeply about the franchise" or not.

Time will tell. I'm on the edge of my fricking seat waiting for an update about this...

you aren't the only one waiting impatiently.

i'm wondering what the overall response will be.... i haven't heard a single happy response to the idea. can't sam raimi know that? can't he not know that?
