you know, the funny thing about that, is that i've been trying to reasure myself about the evil dead remake by thinking of the dawn of the dead movies. but it hasn't been working, and here's why:
dawn of the dead, albeit rocking, has no "star." there is no one character that makes the movie what it is. it's just the perfect combination of zombies, gore, explosions, tension, and more zombies. evil dead, on the other hand, IS ash. without ash, there is no evil dead. you wanna tell me there were other people in those movies? i'm sorry, i can't hear you. i'm too busy paying attention to how hard bruce campbel rocks.
there are certain characters that can't be remade. the day robert england passes on his legacy of freddy to someone else will be the day i no longer believe in god. and in fairness, this isn't limited to horror... try replacing hans solo with a new actor. or replace the dude that al pacino played in "scent of a woman." can't be done.
so, in conclusion, movies that are the character should never be remade.
