It's when they separate that the reality of running headlong into a losing fight strikes him. Sokka knows they'll all be better off for his leaving to track down the Southern warriors and rally the Northern Tribe.

"We can do this," he tells Aang.

Aang looks way too old when he replies, "We have to."

To Toph, he says, "Be careful out there, kiddo."

"Don't call me 'kiddo,'" she says, punching him in the shoulder.

Katara tells him, "I'll miss you." She's got her arms wrapped tight around him and her forehead pressed against his shoulder.

Sokka never wants to let her go, never wants to let her out of his sight, but he has to. "Hey, the world hasn't ended yet, y'know."

He only looks at the firebenders, and feels like a traitor for walking toward one ocean while his friends turn for another with people who were enemies six months ago. People he doesn't think he'll ever trust.

Show no fear, fight to the last man, always do what needs to be done.
