Cape Mendocino, 1982 / 2012

I took bob_bunny on one of my favorite scenic drives yesterday: the old stagecoach road known locally as "The Wildcat." Our destination was Cape Mendocino, which is the westernmost point of land on the coast of California. When we got there, I took a photo of the Cape from the same spot as one I took 30 years previously. Here is the "then-and-now" view.

Yes, indeed, in terms of the terrain, little at all has changed. The cattle moved a few hundred yards in the intervening years, however. Slow buggers, aren't they? ^^

Wow, we both discovered the Eureka area around the same time! I didn't even live here yet when I took the 1982 picture. In fact, it was that day-trip on the Wildcat 30 years ago that pretty much sealed my decision to leave L.A. and move to Humboldt. I really felt at the time that this is where I belonged, and I moved here only 8 months later. I never left, and I likely never will...

It's nice to know there are still some places left in California where we deer vastly outnumber that nasty, invasive species H. sapiens. ^^

Ive never been to the "Lost Coast"...really should go some time!

It's great! Just make sure your car's suspension and front end are in good working order before you attempt the Wildcat. My poor 20-year-old Volvo was just about battered to death by the beast. ^^
