Whatever happened to soul music?

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of my becoming a listener and fan of popular music. My mom got me a clock radio when I started 5th grade, and it really transformed my life. Even at that very young age, I had already become an insomniac, often lying awake until 3 or 4AM just tossing and turning, but after I got my own radio, I at least had something ( Read more... )

Sweet! I didn't mean to imply that there are no soul artists out there doing their thing anymore, though, just that the genre as a whole has disappeared from the airwaves and popular culture. That's primarily what I was lamenting.

That was great! Just goes to prove soul is more than skin deep. ^^ Climax was a white band back in the 1970s whose "Precious and Few" was just as much a soul classic as other groups we associate with the genre.

I remember hearing these on the radio even in the mid 70's where I lived, but that was back when trends took their time to make their way east from California. But no, you don't hear stuff like this hardly anywhere anymore. Definitely great!

And I have to thank punktiger -- Sharon Jones will be added to the regular rotation :)

Something pretty typical these days that I run into a lot given my hobby is dance music with this soul diva inspired vocal, like:

I love soul music, too - and that song by The Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose is one of my favorite ones, too. :)
