Archiving

Given rising tensions, I believe there is a significantly greater-than-zero probability that LiveJournal - being a Russian-owned social media site - could be blocked in this country at some point in the near future, perhaps even imminently ( Read more... )

Glad you posted. I was thinking about you yesterday on how you seemed to have disappeared from social media. Not that I would blame you for undertaking such a move! BTW, is your number still ***-***-8123. I'd love to give you a call one of these days to just talk.

Yes, I suspended all my furry accounts: Facebook, Twitter, LiveJournal, though from time to time I do still update my RL LJ: ashetlandpony. You're quite welcome to follow me there. :-)

And yep, that's still my phone number! Would love to chat pretty much anytime, though these days, afternoons/evenings are probably best.

Yeah, I've been a little nervous about that too... frankly even if it's not deliberately blocked, you have to wonder if/how they will make money to keep it up.

I wish there were better backup solutions, not only for this reason but just in general, I've posted so many comments over the years and "good ideas" into the journals of people who delete their account, and then poof... no record of all those thoughts from the past.

Let alone my own personal history, which as you know I dump a lot of onto here. ;-P

Anyway hopefully it will all turn out okay, but I may look into an archiving app or something, myself....

I'm just hoping that LJ has lost so much of its social media clout in the last decade that the powers-that-be over here have completely forgotten about it, or that it's Russian-owned. Personally, I've never had a concern about the ownership issue until now, but as it stands, I'm more worried about the West blocking LJ than Russia deciding to block non-Russian accounts, which is also a possibility. Either way, though, I'd lose access, and I would consider that to be a deep personal loss.

I had previously downloaded all my posts. But I did a poor job of it not downloading comments for most posts. I plan to do a better job of it soon.

Supposedly LJ blocked Dreamwidth for crossposting and importing. My posts are already there, so this place will soon be nothing more than a placeholder. Though I have low activity on all online sites.

It turned out my imports were more complete than I thought they were. I only had to manually transfer a handful of posts to bring everything right up to date. :)

Quite a while ago I moved my primary access to DW (same name there), relying on the DW crosspost to keep my entries over here current, and running the occasional comment import from LJ to DW to keep that side straight, but there's not much can be done about all the connections within LJ (comments on other LJs, LJ friends who're not on DW, etc.). At one point I even tried to make a local server my primary source, but that turned out to be too complicated...

Dreamwidth still confuses me sometimes, tbh. The functional overlaps of circles, subscriptions, and 'grants access' seems overly complicated to this old man. I'll get used to it eventually, I guess. It's also a shame the import/crosspost option is apparently gone now, but then again, I'm surprised LJ put up with what amounts to content theft for as long as they did.

DW's LJ-import option is apparently working intermittently at present, but LJ's access control system does tend to block DW's servers from time to time, especially when folk get their LJ passwords wrong.

I guess it depends on who owns the content. I know some sites like to claim that they own everything uploaded to them, but I'd claim my LJ content is mine, and it's my business if I choose to have it hosted elsewhere, maybe even in more than one place. Comment ownership's a bit more complicated, as in the LJ model the LJ holder can pretty much control it (especially within friend-locked posts).

I used lj archive in the distant past and LJ also advertises an export by month feature though it doesn't bring the comments.

*snugs* Though I'm terrible about keeping in touch, if something does come to pass with the site... well we're still online elsewhere. Totally understand not wanting to lose your writings. And thanks to you!

I didn't even know LJ had an archive option. Shows you how much I keep up with this site nowadays! Seems kind of silly that they don't include comments, though. Discussions in comments are sometimes more interesting/deep than the OPs themselves.
