So, after seeing the movie for Sweeney Todd which was really good, but a bit too slasher for me, I looked to see when the Sweeney Todd Tour was coming for the musical.

So, going into it I knew that it was going to be unusual. This production only has 10 people not the normal 30 in most musicals, and the actors on stage play the instruments while ( Read more... )

I had the good luck to see that production on broadway in 2006 with Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone. It was fucking incredible. The 2007 staging of Company! Was similar and I thought very good but not as successful on many counts. Sweeney Todd done this way had this intense Marat/Sade tone to it. Company! done that way sort of felt like 'broadway on a budget'.

Sorry, that must have been 2005 when I saw Sweeney (?) Either way. Patti Lupone blew that thing away -- creepy, SEXY, and creepier for being sexy, and seething. And Michael Cerveris -- shaved bald -- was Macheath squared and squared again. He was an Edward Gorey painting come to life with the full visual thrill of the original and all the terrifying reality thrown in...

Anyway, I can't say enough good. I'm glad you saw/enjoyed it!

I saw it on Broadway and it's wonderfully visceral.

Delia and I saw this on Broadway. It was quite possibly the most impressive thing we've seen live -- and we've seen a lot. This was stunning.

Things that are not better than the Broadway revival of Sweeney:

Showboat
Chicago (London's west end)
Spring Awakening
Wicked
Avenue Q
Jesus Christ Superstar
Lion in Winter (off Broadway)
Batboy, the Musical (off Broadway)
Ragtime
Into the woods
Annie Get Your Gun
Les Miserable
Spamalot
Putnam County Spelling Bee
Xanadu
South Pacific (Lincoln Center)

I love this. We saw it front row, "dead" center (heheh), in San Francisco a few months ago when it came through and only Todd/Lovett had changed from the Broadway cast. I've only see the Lansbury original Broadway production on DVD and while she made an excellent Mrs. Lovett, I actually prefer this revival with the 10 players and on-stage instrumentation. It's simply amazing.

We liked it so much we went back to see it later. I bought balcony tickets for a huge group and some who didn't know the show at all were still blown away. Amazing.

We also saw a cabaret show with Lauren Molina and the guy who was playing Antony... yes, combined with the movie release (which I also loved) it was a very Sweeney autumn/winter, and I can't say I minded. ;)
