"most of the kids who say the pledge have no idea what they're saying...they just memorize it.."

are you kidding me? doesn't that sound vaguely nostalgic of Orwell's 1984? It's brainwashing, if it's said enough it isn't questioned and that in itself is coercive. Children at such young ages are imprinting everything on their brain- they are ripe for 'shaping' or sliding little messages to without their full knowledge. They shouldn't be subjected to the pledge in public schools *because* they don't know the immediate implications- thus rendering them largely unable to find fault with it. That's like saying it's okay to teach an adult with autism of some degree to say something over and over again just because they may not know the immediate implications-which is equally disgusting. Honestly.

"In God We Trust" is different. "In God We Trust" always refers to our faith in our United States currency.

The Pledge of Allegiance is not just offensive to Atheist and Agnostics, but Muslim's first pledge the alligiance to God. Many Muslim students remaing seated during their resighting of the Pledge. Certainly, Muslims are proud U.S. citizens. The Pledge of Allegiance creates cultural divides among U.S. citizens, instead of unifying them.

Allah is Yaweh is God. Three religions, same entity. How is "In God We Trust" any different?--it isn't, it's the same thing people have bitched about in both the pledge and, forfuckssake, the commandments; people just begin losing their fervent criticism when money becomes the issue.

The ACLU does some really earth-shattering stuff, don'tcha know?

The words "under God"is as a divisive statement within our nation's culture. The pledge was created by a Protestant minister who deliberately excluded the use of "God" or any scripture in the words to the pledge. It as altered during the 1950's during the "Red Scare" to "differentiate ourselves from Godless (Russian) Communists' (quotes Ikes). Historically, it has not been there forever and was part of a revolt against Kaynesian economics and a precursor to the civil rights of woman and minorities, namely the expansion of the New Deal (remember that woman who just allowed to vote and work two decades ago were losing their jobs to the soldiers returning for WWII ( ... )
