There's a compound in evergreen tree sap that can irritate the eyes and other sensitive membranes in the body. It also give the trees that distinctive smell. That doctor probably went through six years of medical training, so perhaps you should trust him.

At any rate: if he gave you meds and you feel better... herm... well, selbstverstaendlich.
