50th Anniversary Fanwork-a-thon-a-thon, Round Four: Eight

(Secondary prompt: Monsters)

Round Three has barely begun, but like the shark (or indeed the flying metal-boned stingray thingy) if we stop swimming we are lost...

Which is to say the vast majority of our members' contributions to the Nine 'thon are still due before the end of the month, but already we must turn our thoughts to the next leg. Remember, those of you still working on entries, even if your agreed dates are by now distant memories - deadlines are a state of mind and we all still want to see your works on the comm whenever you do get them finished - the fanwork's the thing!

Nevertheless, like Cybermen jauntily marching across the Lunar surface, we must press on. And the first Doctor up for consideration in Quarter 2 of 2013 (surely it was Xmas only last week?!) is...

The plucky survivor of a horrifying case of medical malpractice, April's Doctor was in many ways an innovator, mainly in the field of, well...kissing and...girls, as Eleven would no doubt describe it. True, Five did give Nyssa a parting smooch, but not with anything like the enthusiasm this Doctor summoned for...the defendant in the very medical malpractice suit we were talking about just now...? Not one to hold a grudge, obviously. After that uneven start, however, our man went on to grow and grow, into mysterious new dimensions of audio and print adventure that soon far outstripped his meagre (in more ways than one) televised escapades. At some point, he cut his hair and got a leather jacket, and we all know how that ended up. Wouldn't it be nice to see him on our screens again, though, for the 50th? Yes - it's:

Eight is this month's subject. And he's a strange one, isn't he? It seems to be the general consensus in fandom (and I don't personally disagree) that while Liverpool's own Paul McGann and, quite possibly, TV's Eric Roberts were pretty awesome indeed in their starring roles as Eight and the Master, most of the rest of the 1996 TV Movie was, well...a bit strange, and not in a good way. And yet, Eight has redeemed himself in other media to the point where now he holds a fond place in many fans' hearts. There have been the novels - the long-running series of Eighth Doctor Adventures, some of which were very fine indeed, and, perhaps even better, the audios that have once again allowed McGann to strut his Doctorish stuff with some very highly-regarded new companions. Just don't try to make them all fit into one continuity, or indeed with the post-2005 series. He's almost an "other Doctor", our Eight (but not quite - he's very, very definitely been established as "canon" in the new series by now).

You know the score, friends. All forms of fannish endeavour are welcome, and that goes for fanfic, fanart, fanvids, fanmixes, icons, podfic, and absolutely any other medium in which you want to express your creativity and celebrate your love for that which is Who. Eight himself may prove to be your starting point, with his fabulous hair and frequent memory-loss, but think of the companions, the enemies, the other salient features of his era, as well. That might take in the various companions Eight has travelled with - Charley or Lucie, or Sam or Anji or Fitz (to name but a few). It might include the dread lore of Faction Paradox (I would be a happy bunny if anybody dared tackle that weird stuff) or that sinister cove Sabbath. It might well include the Time War, for fan lore seems to suggest that Eight had a role to play in that (and almost certainly a terrible one), maybe in conjunction with Lady President Romana. Remember, though, kids - "Zagreus sits inside your head..." Brrr!

As ever, something that evokes the idea of the oncoming 50th Anniversary would be especially welcome, but maybe the best way to do that is by creating the most quintessentially Eight-y Eight fanwork you possibly can?

And once again, we have a secondary theme for those of you who would like to do something else. And for April 2013, that will be...

Monsters. I won't go as far as to say that Doctor Who would be nothing without its monsters, for there are numerous fine stories that don't have any. A big part of Who's appeal, though, since the early days when the first Dalek hove into view in that metal city, has been the weird and wonderful and sometimes just plain unusual creatures that the Doctor has come across. What do I mean by a monster? Well, there have been some figurative monsters who were in reality all too human over the years (some of them even historical characters), but I guess I'm really talking aliens and such, however politically incorrect some of them might consider the "m" word to be. We have whole species of creatures - Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans etc etc - who have made a career out of causing trouble for the Doctor and his friends. And then again, there are the memorable one-shots and individuals, the Myrkas and the Skarasens, if you will. And not all of them have been enemies - the word "monster" seems grossly unfair to such luminaries as the eponymous Creature from the Pit or the gentle (not to mention somewhat excitable) Alpha Centauri. The Silurians, too, are just misunderstood. But you get the idea - we're talking creatures here, non-human-looking lifeforms, the stranger the better. I think the majority of Who fans probably have a particular favourite, especially as the new series has added such excellent new monsters as the Slitheen, the Ood, the Weeping Angels, and so many, many more. Be inspired by them, friends - go wild. Go create!

I hope you will find yourselves inspired. If so, please express your wish to participate in the comments to this post. It would be great if you could name a date too (list provided below) as it helps spread the contributions out over the whole month, but not an absolute requirement for those of you who prefer to play it by ear.

Probably best to familiarise yourselves with the rules:

- Please feel free to post your fanworks directly to the community, or link to your own Livejournal/Dreamwidth account or any external archive or site you use for hosting your stuff.
- There are no minimum length requirements, but please put any large images or, in the case of fanfic, anything over 1000 words, under a cut or the other side of a link.
- There are no rating restrictions, but again please cut and provide warnings for anything over PG-13, or which might be considered triggering. Use your common sense.
- Character-bashing is in the eye of the beholder, but there are ways of critiquing or lampooning something you don't necessarily like about the show without resorting to straight-up hatchet-work that is going to cause angst on the comm. Common sense, again.
- Disclaimers may or may not actually work from a legal standpoint, but they help me sleep at night.
- Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Anyway, that's my spiel out of the way. The rest lies in your more than capable hands. :)
