beauty exploding

He doesn’t know what to say, or how to respond, when she lays her head so gently against his side. Her short and stubby fingers run through his mane; they tug at the tangles, the result of ruthless fighting and hours spent far too long daydreaming.
Her face has been behind his eyelids so many times, he is sure it will be imprinted there forever. He can’t tell if it will be a joyful memory or a haunting reminder of age and humanity at its worst-but he is sure time will choose a side. She is so human, so young-so vivacious, and youthful, and effervescent, and countless other adjectives that can never encompass her wholly as the lovely person that she is.
But he’ll never tell her that; fond words of sweet devotion will never fumble from his aged fangs and chapped lips. Because, no matter how many years pass-no matter how many minutes stretch on endlessly, void of her heart pounding against his, physically and emotionally alike-he knows his fantasies will never accumulate or consummate to his deepest desire.
Her hands fiddle carelessly with his ear, earning a twitch from him and a childish giggle from between her smiling lips. A chuckle rumbles from his chest and makes her head bob against his body. She laughs once more, louder this time, and the sound is like music to his ears. White music notes and the delicate lines of a measure clash with the chocolate hair and sporadic freckles of her face, a combination of beauty exploding behind his eyes. The speeding of his pulse matches the rhythmic spurts of stars in his closed eyes, and he finds peace from this overwhelming heartache-if only for a moment.
He falls asleep with her face pressing against shoulder blade. All he can feel is her warm lips against his suddenly warm skin.
