In an effort to do the research for a poem idea I had been tinkering with I watched both Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, I am convinced that Gene Wilder is the better Wonka, but Tim Burton certainly makes the candy look amazing ( Read more... )

Yeah, I saw that, it was okay - but the style and the use of Johnny Depp are no longer enough for me. Burton's films seem more and more to lack (for my own lack of a better word) soul, they replicate something he is very good at by now and essentially know for... but he no longer exists within his films. I really feel Burton's presence in a lot of his early work, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, even Beetlejuice, and I think the apex of that is Big Fish. But I don't get the sense that he is as invested in the work as maybe he once was. It happens to artists you reach a level where you can coast so you do... but I don't need to be alongside him in the car if the drive is no longer interesting.
