I APPRECIATE THIS PSA. I have been considering this option recently (especially as many of my online friends are big on going Green) and with your recommendation will think more positively about buying one and trying it out! :)
I have a divacup--while I LOVE the idea of it, the reality is, er distinctly painful, so I haven't used it in a while. Perhaps I shall try it again. Because when it works, it's awesome. It's just getting it in that's the hard part.
I couldn't get mine it at all until I read about different folding methods here. I use the origami one. It's harder to keep a grip on, but it's the smallest folded shape and opens up really easily once inside.
It hurts at first for sure but that becomes less of an issue with practice.
Yeah, that's the hardest part. If you want to keep trying, browse through menstrual_cups for all the TMI-y help you could ever ask for. And definitely try different folding techniques.
That's interesting. After doing my research, I realized that the U.S. has a very tampon-centric culture because most women like being able to ignore menstruation as much as they can--which I suppose is best done by using a disposable form of internal protection that basically inserts itself. I should do some research about this in other countries/cultures.
If it helps any, when I first got my period, my mother's attitude was basically, here's the pad, keep it in your pants as best as you can without soiling your underwear. If the underwear is soiled, then it should be dropped into hot water as soon as possible. She never approved of tampons because they weren't sanitary, but I doubt she'll take kindly on menstrual cups. Most of the Chinese girls in my high school used sanitary pads, and skipped swimming classes for their period, while the white girls usually used tampons. Of course, PE teachers were less than sympathetic about skipping PE because of your period.
I think I just might investigate this menstrual cup thing! I never much liked tampons because I felt weird sticking things inside me, but that was before I met The Boy, so it could possibly be a whole lot easier now.
Anyway, I came by to let you know that I added you. I saw you over at vegancooking. :)
I heartily recommend menstrual cups (especially if you're environment or health minded, which you might just be if you're hanging out at vegancooking). It's definitely been the best three menstruating months of my life using it. The LJ support community, menstrual_cups, is very helpful and supportive, too.
