SO ANYWAY, the most recent Saiyuki chapter (available at radiofreebanri) is the beginning of an apparent short arc called "Sunspot," which is apparently Hazel's backstory a la the Burial chapters ( Read more... )

Id say Protestant or Methodist-Episcopalian clergy dont dress like that.

admittedly I don't know the canon at all! I'm just trying to help fit to the time period given.

Oooo lookit what I found on wikipedia~ :D

...which is to say I'm looking through that now to see if I can help you any! Although also, if you have aaaany information at all as to like... rituals or even prayers or such that Hazel uses that would probably narrow things down much more than anything. |D

Aaand looking through that my gut's leaning towards Catholic or Anglican. Though this is kinda more based on what sort of nationality I'd assume for Hazel, but most protestant branches of the Christian church don't do quite so much with the elaborate robes and such. Especially if you're talking the immigrants to the Americas. now the Catholic missionaries to the Americas, on the other hand.....

Dude that is totally awesome WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE. I PLAY TWO PRIESTS. FAILGET

The thing is by the time we ever see Hazel doing anything religious he's already kinda forsaken Christianity :( The ritual he uses to bring back the dead, and the chant--Minekura wrote them as...well, uh, scribbles (though she said that actually written out they should be close to Latin in response to the anime rendition in which he does some kinda funky hilarious Elvish thing). Hazel has also never really prayed or done anything ritualistic like that, sob.

...that is seriously all the info I've got to go on. :( Maybe Filbert does something in this chapter? Buuuut that still counts on me waitin' for translations!

Well honestly considering the time period, location, and style of dress, Iiiii'd kinda lean towards Catholic. Because he really makes me think of like. the Catholics that went and did all their missionary stuff in Latin America back when everyone else was pillaging. Or um. maybe protestant like the Dutch missionaries in Japan. BUT YEAH in terms of colonial America... you're looking at stuff like Puritans or Quakers in the northeast, a bit later on lots of Lutherans in the midwest, and Baptists in the south. And the Catholics all over Latin America. SO I'M LEANING TOWARDS CATHOLIC because I know most of those others dooon't tend to do the robes and stuff like Hazel's got and also just. stereotype. XD

Note however that even if he was raised Catholic he could have some, err, special variations on that. Especially if we're talking Latin America-style Catholic, 'cause a lot of that ended up getting local beliefs mixed in and all. :D
