abstinence rant

Jul 02, 2003 20:53

This article is about a group of people who went to Las Vegas to preach to people they found on the street about the virtues of abstinence. I have no problem with this. I may not believe in saving yourself until marriage but if it works for you and you want to tell others about doing it, go for it. But if you're going to do it, give people real ( Read more... )

HPV is also linked to cervical cancer.

Do you know why the abstinence-only people give misinformation? Because objective information doesn't support their agenda well enough.

And I doubt there are that many people living with AIDS, although I'll have to look that up. Living with HIV, sure. One of my pet peeves is people who use the term interchangeably.

I was right. From an article on MSNBC - "An estimated 850,000 to 950,000 people in the United States are infected with HIV and 36 million worldwide."

And from a chart based on information from the CDC - By June of 2000, a total of 753,907 AIDS cases had been reported to the CDC. That's total, from the start of outbreak.

Now, for some people, this may not matter. They may say "900,000 with HIV, boy that's sure a lot, who cares if it's HIV or AIDS, I could still catch it." And it is vitally important to practice safer sex.

But effective education hinges on truthful information. If someone is giving you incorrect information, they're no longer trustworthy and nothing they say will make a difference.

it does sound like they are trying to confuse HPV and HIV. But wouldn't it be worse if they confused it with HMV? People would be having unprotected sex with the hopes of getting discount CDs and concert tickets.

I don't have a problem with them talking about HPV. What else are they supposed to call it? If we're just going by acronyms, there are a lot of things that can sound similar, because they're named in similar ways - human papilloma virus, human immunodeficiency virus, etc. The problem is not that they're talking about it, but that so few people know what it is, what it does, and how to prevent it. It's the most common STD, it can cause cervical cancer, and hardly anyone's familiar with it.

After reading your response I realised that there aren't any HMVs in Texas. It's a music/movie store. More information is available here: http://www.hmvonline.com/

You may have already heard of them, but just in case I thought I'd clarify Sal's comment.

[HPV] can cause genital warts, cervical cancer, and oral herpes

The first two yes. What's your source for the third? Oral herpes is normally caused by the herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-I); occasionally people will get an HSV-II infection with oral outbreaks.

I swear I remember reading about this when I was researching HPV online, but now I can't find anything to corroborate it anywhere. So you're probably right, and I'm taking that part out of my entry.
