This week, I learned that a Roman aristocrat's third name (cognomen) was actually a nickname, occasionally based on a physical attribute.

Which means that the history books, which generally refer to them by their cognomens (to avoid confusing all the Gaiuses and Marcuses) are actually full of the exploits of people called "Hairy", "Little Boots", " ( Read more... )
