I'm Short On Quirky Titles

It's been an interesting past few days. I hung out with Jhon and Brian last Saturday. That was awesome even though Jhon was sick. I went to see Spike Lee speak at my school last Tuesday. I was expecting him to be more anti-whitey but I was surprised that he was so hard on black culture, particularly hip hop, for promoting anti-intellectualism ( Read more... )

Spike Lee is one of those individuals I have a hard time getting a grasp on. One the one hand I love many of his films (Jungle Fever being my favorite and unfairly overshadowed by the also nice but not quite as fulfilling Do the Right Thing; he topped it all with the epic Malcolm X) and the unique perspectives he brings. He writes some incredible dialogue and very interesting characters. But, on the other hand, he really finds ways to get on my nerves when he speaks. I remember when (back in late-1997/early-1998) he was pissed with Tarantino for having Samuel L. Jackson say "nigger" a lot in Jackie Brown (another brilliant film, overshadowed by previous greatness and critical acclaim). That never sat well with me because it was all part of the Robbie character; in fact, Lee's had similar characters. It was like he was pissed that Quentin wrote the dialogue because he was white but Spike would've been okay with it if it was John Singleton or somebody ( ... )

I'm not a big Spike Lee fan based on what I've seen. I really thought Summer of Sam was going to be about more than just Italian people having sex with each other. I kind of want to see the movie again though. I also saw 4 Little Girls the other day because I thought I had to. I thought it was really good until it started dragging near the end. Maybe it's just because the chairs were unbearable to sit in, especially since I have back problems.

I saw Hotel Rwanda last Tuesday. It was one hell of a movie but the conversation the class had after about it pissed me off. That'll be the topic of an upcoming post. Thoughts?

I'm planning on seeing Hotel Rwanda in the next couple of weeks. I'm interested in hearing your rant about the class discussion. Please follow through and write it.

Have you seen Jungle Fever? If you haven't, that's the one Spike Lee I would definately recommend. Strong performances, strong story, great dialgoue...overall, a really stellar film, in my opinion. I think it is the best non-Oliver Stone film of 1991.

I'll definitely do that and we'll probably have a good discussion on it.

Never seen Jungle Fever but I probably will someday.
