Went to Long Beach Comic Expo this Saturday. It was a most excellent day indeed! Better write about it before I forget, haha.
The morning started out a little derpily, since we ran a bit late getting everyone together so that we could begin our ~adventure~. On the plus side, I think I've almost mastered transitioning through the G Em C D chord progression without yucky buzzing. :D PRIDE IN SMALL GUITAR IMPROVEMENTS! I CAN NOW ANNOY EVERYONE BY PLAYING FRIDAY.
But yes then friends came to pick me up (finally got to meet Cae! HER ARTS ARE AMAZING AND SHE LOVES SANDMAN LIKE I DO SO I APPROVE). I was a traitor because everyone else had superhero shirts sobbus it's not like I don't want one but I've never had the moniesssss (I was wearing my geeky Coexist shirt with the TARDIS because HELLO DOCTOR WHO SEASON SIX). And after a few mishaps involving failure at reading maps or understanding how the GPS works, we made it to the Long Beach Convention Center in one piece~
First signs of nerdery/geekery (SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE TO ME I ALWAYS FORGET) were the pokemon trainers who parked nearby (tbqh most of the costumes weren't all that impressive. I think I just have stupidly high standards from encountered: the cars on display outside--one that looked like the starfighter Luke used to blow up the Death Star, but for some reason they had yoda sitting in the "cockpit" area (the X-Wing I think? need to confirm that with wiki later). It comes to my attention within a few yards of the convention center entrance that my phone reception is touch and go. =_=; Gotta stick to these peeps like glue lest I get lost.
We got inside the center, snagged our badges armbands, snagged a photo with a few members of the 501st legion, then sauntered on into the actual convention hall (it was only one room in the entire center whaaat). Met up with upperclassmen (CIRCLES OVERLAPPING ERP) but separated again pretty quickly orz. Proceeded to wander round and round the (teeny-tiny!) con hall multiple times waiting for
Dustin Nguyen to set up his booth. Lots of comics. Looots.
More wandering commenced as the others searched for peeps to commission and to look at more comics. At one point Rosan went to see if she could buy an Inception movie poster but it was $30 sobsob so expensive ;w; Also there was something about a Teen Titans writer guy but I was kind of not really paying attention because right across from it I spotted MUCHA INSPIRED FANART OF THE GOTHAM CITY SIRENS (and Babs!Batgirl!). So FWOOSH went me and Rosan and there was much "Ooh man I want but WHICH ONES NRGLE"ing and eventually I caved in and bought prints with Smith!Doctor Who, Rockwell/Leyendecker-inspired retro!Selina and Bruce and Babs!Batgirl and Dick!Robin in the same style. Can't wait to put them up somewhere~~~
Then we realized that DUSTIN WAS IN THE BUILDING SPAZZLES. Diana and Jen came prepared with issues of Batgirl to sign while I was like U.U I have nothing all my creys that's okay at least I get to bask in his presence. And then we all were dazzled by his presence except for maybe Diana because she managed to chat with him and after mentioning how Jen was a big fan of his he gave the two of them signed poster size versions of his sketchbook cover and then they took a photo together and it was great.
We circled around to the other side of the "artist alley" area and on our journey met
Peter V Nguyen and the entire time I looked through his portfolio thing I was going "WHY DOES THIS ART LOOK SO FAMILIAR WHY" and then herpderp it was revealed that he pencilled the Catwoman oneshot for "Bruce Wayne: the Road Home" as well as an issue of Gotham City Sirens. We (well, more like the others...I just kinda went ( °٢° ) idek how to talk to people I admire okay gosh IT'S LIKE TROY FROM COMMUNITY AND THE READING RAINBOW GUY I AM NOT KIDDING). He was working on a comic and we got to watch him work and it was great! Oh and I took a photo of him with the others (I avoid being in photos because whenever I see myself in them it's like HERP WHO IS THIS UGLY FATASS GO AWAY) and then Dustin almost photobombed them but Rosan shouted and scared him off so he hid behind his poster thingie and it was hilarious/cute (yes. cute.). I am sobbus because that would've been the best photo ever.
We took a short lunch break as Jen and Rosan hunted down nomnoms (it was pizza) and then it was back to the con. Most of the rest of the time was spent orbiting Dustin and Peter's tables. I also bought Dustin's sketchbook (IT IS GORGEOUS SQUEE). Also, while waiting in line to buy it from him we happened to see him doodle a Poison Ivy for the guy in front and all of us were like *A* "WE CAN ASK FOR DOODLES? OHMYGAHD" As previously mentioned I have this thing where I lose all ability to speak in the presence of gods (selective mutism? LOLIDEK) and so Diana kinda basically had to talk for me THXBB and I got a Nightwing sketch in the $5 sketchbook i bought from Borders before it closed and IT IS BEAUTIFUL. I CAN JUST GAZE AT IT ALL DAY. Diana also got a Steph chibi which was baw so cute. We then circled back to Peter (like I said, we were orbiting) where one thing led to another and BAM SKETCH FROM PETER OF SELINA (SQUEAL DID I MENTION HOW MUCH I LOVE HIS SELINA? SQUEAL.) And then Jen got a Jason sketch and Cae got a sketch of her OC Ein and Diana got a sketch of her OC Monty AND THESE WERE ALL AMAZING.
Somehow Jen and Rosan ended up camping behind the tables with Peter (my gosh these people must all have "Bewitching" Charm levels hurhur Persona reference) while I tagged along with Cae and Diana to go check up on the status of their commissions from
Ray Anthony Height. HIS LINES WERE SO BEAUTIFUL AND CLEAN I COULD NOT STOP STARING. And he drew really hot versions of Cae and Di's OCs aaahhh. OH AND HE ALSO HAS OCs that I really want to read about called The Icons.
Dropped by Dustin's again and met his friend Jason who apparently has work on the Simpsons and Futurama and also apparently owns Matt Groening's old TV (wat). He is also pro artist kya kya. Upon triumphant return to Peter's table Jen and Rosan bragged about how Dustin gave them chocolate and it was like...okay I have to admit I was rather jelly haha sobs so pathetic. BUT YES.
The best part about this con? There was also lots of Jen admire-stalking Dustin from afar because she is shy uguu. Dustin seemed to find it very amusing. He also drew a Cass chibi for her and then with Diana's encouragement handed her paper and pencil and made her draw something for him. HER REACTION WAS PRICELESS I WISH I'D TAKEN A PICTURE. She drew Damian and NOW IT IS DUSTIN'S FB PROFILE PIC I CANNOT EVEN AAAAHHH SO AMAZING. Jen art traded with a pro holy crap.
There was more chatting for awhile and then we had to leave because sadface the expo was about to end. We said our good-byes and then left to have dindins at Curry House which was delicious. And then I came home and WHOO DOCTOR WHO SEASON SIX PREMIERE IN WHICH MATT SMITH IS ADORABLE CROWLEY (MATT SHEPPARD) WAS IN THE FUCKING TARDIS AND ALEX KINGSTON WAS FLAWLESS AS ALWAYS.
I think what I loved about this con was the coziness. People were complaining about how small and cramped it was, but I think that if it were any bigger there would have been no way for us to have gotten to known the artists as well as we did. At one point, Dustin's friend Jason asked us how we knew Peter so well, and when Diana told him that we just met him today he was really surprised. xD
