It seems as though those strange rumours going around that we were getting less Torchwood, along with less Doctor Who next year are in fact completely true. We're apparently getting only 5 episodes, which will be shown all in one week. I'm disappointed, but I supposed something is better than nothing. I don't pretend to know much of anything at all about BBC funding, but in addition to not getting a license fee increase last year, the partnership between BBC Wales and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation came to and end, and the CBC was putting up a lot of the money for DW. And apparently the BBC website as a whole is hugely over budget, which is partially why they've cracked down on non-UK IPs accessing the high-bandwidth content like flash and video.

So it looks to me like several problems all hitting at the same time, and I'm actually impressed, that they've got the courage to cut back for a year instead of trying to do more with less, as DW did in the late seventies and all through the eighties.

I think they value the show in the long-run too much to try and struggle on. Smart move, in my books. Re-group and return with a BANG.

I'm stunned.
I was ok with the DW 'rest period' to let DT do other things and still keep him as The Doctor... but cutting TW? *weeps*

These problems aren't restricted to Cardiff. Loads of people at the Beeb have been laid off. The whole structure needs a re-jig, I think. I read that they £7,000 a day on taxis. O.o It would help tenfold if the government stopped being asshats and actually allowed them to increase the licence fee. I think the Doctor Who break is as much to do with wanting a creativer breather, as it is money.
