PREVIOUSLY:

“Hello kids! I’m back!” Jack announced, a smile that could charm a dead man spread across his battle weary face.

“And this is The Doctor! Ianto, can you make us some of your famous coffee?” Jack finished, leaving Gwen, Tosh and even Owen to gape at the new comer who gave them a charming smile before looking at Ianto, at which point his face dropped.

“Hello, Danny.” The Doctor greeted his son.

Chapter Three

Jack glanced between the expressionless Ianto and the grim faced Doctor, confused at why The Doctor would recognise Ianto (unless it had been at Torchwood One during the Battle of Canary Wharf) and if the Doctor had met Ianto before then why on Earth was he calling him ‘Danny’?

“Doctor, you must be mistaken, This is Ianto Jones. He cleans up after us and gets us everywhere on time.” Jack told him, still watching the two men; neither giving anything away with their expressions despite the fact Jack had spent enough time with both of them to be able to read them normally.

“Am I? Oh well then. Moving on. Where’s the tea?” He asked in his odd excitable ramble-y way that this new Regeneration of the Doctor had.

“I’ll go put the coffee on, then. And some… tea for the Doctor.” Ianto paused trying to  funnel all his distaste for the drink (and the man) into that one word. A muscle spasm in the Doctor’s cheek said that he had noticed the intended slight but his brown eyes were blank as he surveyed the room. Ianto left feeling satisfied that he had snubbed the Time Lord but more importantly than that he felt completely destroyed on the inside. This was not exactly how he had imagined Jack’s and his reunion. For example there was far less punching (on Ianto’s side) and kissing (on Jack’s) for Ianto’s liking. He had wanted to yell at Jack - or maybe let Gwen do it for them after all she was almost as bitter as Ianto was feeling and with far less reason - and tell Jack where to go before grabbing the man and kissing him, making him feel Ianto’s pain and love.

And then it had finally happened after months of Jack’s absence. He had returned - only to bring the fucking Doctor with him. A man Ianto had been running from with as much passion as Jack had been running towards the Doctor. It was almost poetic; how life ended up. Like the poetics of Ianto wanting nothing to do with the father who had abandoned him as a child, and then ending up working for a company that was dedicated to the capture of the very same man. Like Ianto falling in love with Captain Jack - and Jack already being in love with the Doctor.

Ianto’s hand was shaking as he started to pour the Doctor’s tea - just the way he liked it one sugar and a little bit of milk… It spilt, scalding his hand. Tears welled up in his eyes and he ran to the tap to splash some cold water on it. That was when Jack arrived.

“Ianto I… Are you okay?” Jack asked, concerned as he saw Ianto was in pain.

Ianto stiffened, a mask sliding into place as he returned to his duties. “I’m fine sir, and you?” He asked, stirring the drinks and placing them all on the tray in preparation of serving them.

“Good… better than. Getting away from this place… well, it was exactly what I needed.” Jack said, a look of contentment on his face, one Ianto had never seen before even in the few moments of satiated post-coital bliss. Ianto refused to let the older man see how his words stung. To Ianto what Jack was really saying was ‘getting away from you was exactly what I needed’.

“I see sir. And now; have you come back or are you just popping in for some coffee and biscuits?” Ianto asked, his tone void of any emotion but Jack knew him well enough to be able to detect the hurt beneath Ianto’s professional veneer.

“Hey,” Jack said softly, blocking Ianto’s path and bring his hand up to cup Ianto’s cheek. “I came back for you… for all of you.” He said. Ianto’s eyes were wary, his pose tense. Jack stepped back, hoping that maybe Ianto would give him a chance to prove his words true.

“Of course sir. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have hot drinks that need delivering.” Ianto replied. But Jack didn’t move.

“There is just one more thing; how did you know the Doctor?” Jack asked, watching Ianto carefully as the man’s eyes became blank and unseeing.

“I don’t.” He ground out. “He must have spotted me at Torchwood One and confused me with another employee. It happens, sir, and all things considered it is the most likely explanation.” Ianto said.

Jack finally stepped away and let Ianto pass. Yes, it was the most likely, but it obviously wasn’t the truth. Both Ianto and the Doctor were lying and after everything Jack had seen in the past few years - Cyberwomen and endless torture included - Jack knew that it couldn’t be good.
