I remember a time in my graphic making career where I thought that every base deserved a texture--OK, so more than one texture--every time I made an icon using it. This is not true! You can get some of the prettiest icons EVER by simply cropping nicely, changing the hue, adding a light texture, etc.--if even. Thus starts the series of Easiest Icons EVER... All of these SUPER EASY icons have placed FIRST at icontest communities.

this to this:
This/These tutorials have been made for your benefit and teaches you two lessons--1) gorgeous icons may not mean talented iconists--they may be using gorgeously colored bases, and 2) not every base needs a trillion preps/textures/brushes/gradients/etc. With that out of the way--the tutorials!
1. Start with
this picture and crop it at 96x96 px so that the focus is on Kakashi and Rin. The white space you see on the bottom is perfectly fine because we'll be covering it with text later anyway.
(Helpful Hint No. 1: Preset your measurements (
Where Can I Do This?)

2. Sharpen the image by going to FILTER>>SHARPEN>>SHARPEN.
You should see something like this:
3. Use
this light texture (a favorite of mine) by
myrasis and set it on top of the image on LIGHTEN at 100%. Move it down slightly.
You should see something like this:
4. Take the Shape Tool (little rectangle) and make a rectangle in #FFFFFF so that the black lines are hidden. You will overlap the image just slightly.
You should see something like this:
5. Create a new layer and add
this brush by Amethestia in #003810.
You should see something like this:
6. Add the text "Next to You" in Castellar, 9 pt, in #003810.
You should see something like this:
7. Save the image now (preferably as a png) and open a blank 100x100 px document. After you add
this border brush by me in #003810, open the image you just saved and paste it on. Viola! Instant first place winner!
Your finished product should look like this:
