I like the idea of this. I did it a few years ago and it really does make you see things differently! Hope your friend is ok. And that definately sounds like a promotion to me! In my experience (as ANZ does those kinda sideways promotions a lot) you usually don't end up going back to the old role (unless you want to of course). It usually ends up a springboard for something else :)

To me, it's a promotion because it was a job opened up to our entire department and well, I got it, but the way our contracts work, they can't give me more than 12 months on it, so when that's up, unless another spot opens up somewhere else, I *have* to go back on the phones. Which in the end is fine, I'm hoping to work on the phones part time in a few years when Adam goes back to work

I don't know, I always found that things change surprisingly a lot in 12 months. I did 3 moves like that where I was supposed to be going back at the end and it just.. didn't happen. other roles came up in the meantime or whatever. But sounds like it is win/win either way :)
