Trowa opened the door quietly and carefully. If his older sister caught him then he was dead meat for sure and he didn’t want that to happen.
If only Cathy wasn’t so mean! She was always making him do chores and acting like she was his mom. She wasn’t even close and that was why Trowa had determined that he had to run away from home.
It was freezing cold outside but his warmest jacket, mittens, and scarf helped to make him warm as he shut the door quietly and walked out into the snowy night. He knew that if he was careful that Cathy wouldn’t be able to follow his tracks and he would be free to join the circus.
He even had a new name picked out: Triton Bloom. He thought it sounded cool and professional. He was going to learn the trapeze and be shot out of a cannon one day!
Trowa walked until the snow got too deep for him and then he found a log oto sit on. Nothing around him looked familiar and the snow had picked up so much that he could hardly see. He sniffled and wiped his nose on the sleeve of his jacket. He wished he had thought to bring a flashlight and then his tummy rumbled, reminding him that he had refused to eat the casserole Cathy had made for dinner.
Trowa crossed his little arms across his chest and grunted. Cathy probably didn’t even notice he was gone. After all, she had been knee-deep in her precious school books when he walked out.
He was cold, it was dark, and if Trowa told the truth he would say that he was scared to death that he was lost and would never be found. Tears formed at the corners of his eyes and trickled down his reddened cheeks, disappearing into his thickest wooly scarf when they hit his chin.
Trowa heard a noise, like a tiny bell ringing. The air shimmered in front of him and all of a sudden there was a beautiful blonde boy in front of him.
“Why are you crying?” the boy asked. Trowa took his time answering, too stunned by the ice that seemed to cling to the boy’s eyelashes and the ends of his hair. Also, the boy wore nothing but white and had the sunniest blonde hair Trowa had ever seen.
“I think I’m lost,” Trowa answered. “Can you help me?”
The boy smiled brilliantly and held out a pale hand. “I can help you, but you have to make me a promise.”
Trowa cocked his head to the side. “A promise? What kind of promise?”
A pale, slim finger landed on the tip of his nose. “You have to promise me that you will never do this again. Little boys like you have frozen out here, never to be found again. Right now your sister is at home, crying because she thinks you’re lost forever. I’m sure you don’t really want her to be that sad, right?”
Trowa nodded. “I promise.”
The boy took Trowa’s hand and pulled him to his feet. Right away Trowa started to feel warmer, even in the pit of his belly. A blink later and Trowa was on his front step.
“Promise me one more thing Trowa?” the boy asked as the snow swirled around him. Trowa decided right then and there that the boy must be a fairy, a magical and beautiful fairy.
“What?” Trowa asked, stamping his feet to rid his boots of excess snow.
“When you get older, and can handle the cold, come back and find me?”
Trowa looked into the fairy’s eyes and saw how sad and lonely he was. So he nodded. “I promise.”
The fairy winked. “I’ll hold you to it!”
Trowa watched as the air shimmered and the fairy disappeared. Then he turned and walked back into his warm, safe house.
