Duo closed his eyes and sighed as soon as the band began to play.

“It had to be this song,” he said, mostly to himself. The other people sitting at his table didn’t seem to hear him though and kept on their conversation as if he wasn’t even there.

A soft, sensual latin beat. He’d heard it before, of course. In another time, another place. As long as it had been it seemed like he had heard the song in an entirely different world. But he knew it wasn’t true. No, this song was a lot closer than another world, and meant even more.

It brought back memories he’d rather leave buried, memories that hurt and stung even after all these years. A large hammock, swinging on the porch when the sun was down but the heat was still enough to make sweat stick to your skin; fruity drinks spiked with rum and little to no clothing while lying underneath a slowly rotating ceiling fan.

But most of all, this song reminded Duo of the person he had shared all these things with: his partner and his one-time lover. Back when they had taken that vacation to Belize they thought they had all the time in the world together…that they’d be together forever.

But they didn’t, and they weren’t. And the sad thing was that it all could’ve been prevented. It all could’ve been avoided. But being who they were, and doing what they’d done, they couldn’t get past it. And that had been it. That had been the end.

Yet all it took was listening to this one song to remind Duo of how much he wasn’t over it, of how much he still wanted Heero and how much he still loved him.

Duo stood, and made his way to the open doors that he knew led to the veranda. There, the music was softer and even more dream-like but he was alone to think and alone to remember.

It was painful, but then it again, it really wasn’t. He thought maybe, sometimes, that it was best that they weren’t together anymore, no matter how much he loved Heero. Their relationship had been at turns wonderful and horrible. When things were good they were really good, but when things were bad they were downright horrid. The trip to Belize had been one of the halcyon times, when they were happier than they had ever been. It was followed shortly after by one of the worst fights they’d ever had.

So maybe it was for the best. Maybe it was good.

But maybe, Duo thought as the last notes faded away, maybe it was time to call Heero up and invite him for a cup of coffee.
