Where My Head's At Now

George Carlin, 1937-2008. He's been thrown up on the roof and gotten stuck, I think. On a lighter note, maybe he is in the full light of the god he worshipped (literally). At the very least, I hope he got that CNN-Tropy channel he wanted in his afterlife cable package ( Read more... )

In recent years, I've discovered that watching Ray Harryhausen films can give me ideas for creative projects. I half-watched "It Came From Beneath the Sea" recently, and I got a few rhyming words that I might put into a praise-poem ("shy", "octopi", "cephalopod", "exceeding odd").

A couple of years ago his fairy-tale short "Rapunzel" put me in mind of doing a adult-novel-fairy-tale twist with same set in Depression-era coastal Maine. I swear the tower in which she was imprisoned reminded me of a lighthouse.

That's brilliant.

Hi! What's brilliant? The possible ode to octopi? Being in mind of a lighthouse instead of Rapunzel's tower? Her story being malleable to Depression-era coastal Maine (with Prohibition and rumrunners!)? Or that Ray Harryhausen's work inspires me to create in ways that don't involve puppetry, animation or film effects?

Harryhausen doesn't always have that effect on me. I watched "Clash of the Titans", one of the "Sinbad" movies and "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" without being moved by anything more than how cool they were, filmicly. Then again, watching "Star Blazers" doesn't automatically drive me to the keyboard, either.

I was thinking of Harryhausen's influence on you, though the possible ode to octopi was also impressive.

Try listening to him on audio book (from your library). He really is quite amusing and laugh out loud funny.

So I've heard! But I really, really have a problem now with reading. I think I'm burnt out with trying to get through my "life list", reading crap (and not expecting much) and also reading "good" books (to be underwhelmed, confused or just plain disappointed). While I may discover I have a different opinion about David Sedaris from the general public, I just don't WANT to read any of his stuff and at the end go, "Eh. That was OK. What's next ( ... )
