Yeah, I think I'll always do Yahoo! Messenger before AOL, though. (Another account to ignore, heh.)

Yahoo! Messenger seems be to easier to work with, anyway. I think my problem was that my Yahoo! Messenger copy seemed to be corrupt. Using Trillian (a catchall that commuicates with Yahoo!, AOL, MSN & ICQ) seemed to solve the problem for me, and one can get different friends in different systems in one program, I would recommend downloading it once you feel more comfortable with IM usage.
