It took the final few scenes of the pilot to hook me and then watching the preview/extra stuff is what really hooked me in. On the one hand, I'd say give it a couple of more eps because the pilot is exposistion heavy and the stuff what meaks it "OMG MY BULLET PROOF STUFFS" is coming in the next few eps I think. On the other hand, Haggis loses at subtlety and other stuff that may just not be working for you (But you liked Due South right?)

So this is about the Irish mafia or something? I only discovered such a possibility existed when I watched The Departed. I am half interested in seeing this and half terrified of what it's like. Everyone at least looks Irish, which is nice. What's it generally about?

From wikipedia:
The show follows four young Irish-American brothers in New York's infamous Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood and their involvement with organized crime.[1]Although the show is set in the present day, it draws heavily upon Irish history and iconic themes.

It's about a set of brothers who take over the Irish Mob of Hell's Kitchen (neighborhood in Manhattan). One Brother Tommy is the one that spends his time cleaning up the messes of his other brothers (drug addict Jimmy, gambler Kevin, and playboy Sean) until stuff gets out of control and leads to their taking over the neighborhood.

I'm not gonna attempt to vouch for it on authenticity terms, but it feels fairly standard as far as Irish-American Mafia stories go. I've seen worse. I know I've seen a handful of comments that felt it was way too into Irish-American Stereotypes in the same way that some felt The Sopranos was too into Italian-American stereotypes.
