Sugar Daddies and other Money Solution Fantasies

Over on Slate's XX Factor blog, there has been an interesting discussion about the phenomenon, or the fantasy, of landing a sugar daddy. I'm sure there are a bazillion variations on this fantasy (and sometimes it is a real "plan" for some) and the motivations behind it are complex. Is it purely a financial consideration that happens to fit into ( Read more... )

I agree. That's not to say that if I do eventually marry someone who would rather do most of the thinking about our health insurance and 401(k), etc, etc, (and is competent at it), I would mind so much... but I've never expected anyone to swoop in an save me from having to be responsible for it myself!

(If I see "occupassion" turning up in your book...)

Right. And at some point I believe that was part of the discussion as well. What happens when that arrangement ends?

It is normal to expect (or at least not completely discount) responsibilities and bread-winning to shift in proportion throughout the span of a "normal" marriage. When one spouse is entirely dependent on another (for anything) and does not anticipate that changing, that person is only setting him/herself up for serious struggle if not disaster!

I would not mind it at all if I happened to marry someone wealthy. I just wouldn't do the gold-digger route and seek someone out specifically because of their wealth...

This post reminded me of an article I read earlier in the year on Alternet: http://www.alternet.org/sex/77923/. (I haven't read it in a long time, so it may not be talking about the exact same kinds of relationships as the Slate piece.)

Wow. It isn't exactly the same kind of arrangement they were talking about, but that is an interesting article! I wonder if the ladies at Slate have seen it...
