Successes of the past 27 hours or so

Jan 26, 2009 20:05

1) Found an acceptable (to me) local substitute for King Cake.
2) Got up early to eat breakfast and spend 10 minutes on the Wii Fit.
3) Renewed drivers license at lunch.
4) Bought some "Good Eats" DVDs at the consignment shop after renewing license.
5) Found some curtains at the Christmas Tree Shop that match my bedding.

What substitutes for King Cake? (Twinkie with a plastic Baby Jesus jammed inside?)

Hee. That would rock! I have a couple of leftover plastic babies from the past. Actually it is a pecan danish ring from the stop & shop bakery.

spacemanlove does the French-Canadian version... it's more of a dense, eggy round cake, if I recall right. And she uses the non-theist dried bean, but I know they use that in some of the NO versions too.

True. I think it was a bean long before they made plastic babies.
I tried to make a King Cake myself a few years ago. Forgot to have the dough rise the second time so it ended up sort of tough, but it tasted ok. I just don't have it in me to call around bakeries around here to find one that does or will do it. After calling a few I got frustrated. And I can't justify ordering them by mail.
I don't think I've had the French-Canadian version. Someday I will have to try it out!

What is the Christmas Tree Shop? Nothing to do with Christmas trees?

It is a chain of bargain stores mostly in the northeast. Nothing to do with Christmas trees except around the Christmas season, of course.

I wonder if the association of Christmas makes people feel all warm and fuzzy. I have never heard of that store. I have heard of Duane Reade. Northeast America = Duane Reade to me.

And we have no Duane Reade stores near me at all. I think I've only seen them on trips to New York.
