I don't want to have to be the bad guy, but sometimes ya just gotta tell people "If you can't afford to pay the remaining $9000 for your tuition balance this semester, and you have exhausted all your financial aid, and you have no credit and your family refuses to co-sign an alternative loan or also has bad credit... well, then you probably can't ( Read more... )

...sad, but true. There's only so many options, and sometimes the only one left is "transfer to a state school with lower tuition"

The sad thing is, she's transferring IN to this school.
It won't end well for any of us. She'll be in more debt, she won't be able to finish here anyway, and we'll have bad retention numbers. It is a sad trend.

Unfortunately, yes. Reality is sometimes cruel (and it's sad that it sets you up as the "bad guy" when you're really just the messenger).

It is hard when we (as a society) build up people's expectations so believe that they can go to any school they want. There is a big chasm between the ideal and reality.

The additional galling thing about this is that the schools responsible for this scenario in the first place (way back in the 80s) have such large endowments that your conversation rarely takes place with their students.

Very true. The whole higher education system, as far as access and affordability go, is very, very screwed up.
