Sings-The-Moon-Down, lupus beta of Pack Sacred Trust, pads into the
hall, her nails clicking on the flagstone surface. She lowers her eyes
and head. With a chuff, she says, "This one has word on wind,
Walks-on-even-ground-rhya."
Lorraine kneels, since she prefers not to look down at her friend when
she speaks. "What have you heard?"
The she-wolf lowers her ears, still in her years with the two-legs such
actions confuse her Lupus mind some days. "Wyrm take Caern, many suns
from here. Sept call for help."
Her eyes slide up to her Alpha, seeking unspoken permission to raise her
head.
Lorraine puts her hand on her beta's throat for a moment, and nods,
doing her best as a homid to combine the wolf and human acceptance
gestures. "Which Caern?"
A twitch of the tail. Sings-The-Moon-Down's ears raise. She sits on her
haunches and looks up her her Alpha. "Blood-Moons-Tears. Territory of
Phoenix Spirit. That is name this one hears. Phoenix. But also,
mountain."
Lorraine muses, "Hmmm, I don't know that sept.... do you know any of
their stories?"
The wolf chuffs again. "Winter-Song-Rhya, sings of great deeds and
great battles there. Is Sept of Iron Rider, 'Two Tone' called to
create." She sits proudly, her head held high as she tells the story.
Lorraine's brother, Jacob peers around the corner though he doesn't
interfere when the Beta's talking. He's still very young and full of
energy. No question what his vote is.
Sings-down-the-moon's ears twitch as she hears the Cliath's movements.
She continues, "Gaia hear call of Two-Tone. She bless him with Her
gifts. But Wyrm also hear him call. Great Battle take place on night
when Caern is birthed. Many warriors fall."
Lorraine nods, listening.
"Two-Tone call to spirits," the story continues, "Ask for blessing of
Caern of Peace. Is good call. Wise call. But Spirit of Boar answer
Two-Tone. Caern not know peace. Caern know battle and sacrifice for 50
winters. Is strong Caern to live so long. Mighty in ways of Gaia are
her people. Then Green Dragon come. Slinking through night with foul
breath. Mighty were warriors of Blood-Moon's-Tears, but many were
warriors of Green Dragon, who reach into heart of Boar and twist him to
serve Green Dragon. Caern fall. Sept divided."
Lorraine nods again, more slowly. "I am wary of going to a place so
soaked in rage and loss..... how widely spread is this call?"
The beta looks up at her alpha and meets her gaze. "Mother Gaia calls
Silver Pack to reclaim what is taken. Howl is very loud. Very long."
She chuffs and continues, "Heart of Gaia taken, Rhya. Gaia's heart call
to her Children to take it back."
"Come on, it'll be exciting! Fighting and glory for Gaia!" Jacob
exclaims, interrupting.
Sings-The-Moon-Down growls in warning, her ears lowered. "Full Moon
learn respect for Rhya!"
Lorraine nods her agreement. "You're not a cub anymore, Jacob, don't
interrupt your pack beta when she's talking," she admonishes in a mild
voice.
Jacob lowers his face and looks sheepish.
"Falcon's Tempest is good Full Moon, but need learn place from
sister-rhya," the wolf says. "Falcon's Tempest is also right. Much Glory
to be had in this. Many stories to be sung."
"I worry what effect so much death would have on the Caern's resonance,
but that is for the Theurges to resolve. There will be conflict before
it's all over, even once the Caern is retaken. We will be needed."
The wolf chuffs, "Agreed. Caern need House, Rhya. "
Lorraine nods. "Then we'll go."
A wump of the tail in agreement is her only show of joy at her Alpha's
choice. "This one will tell Howl that Sacred Trust answers call."
Jacob on the other hand cheers, lacking restraint.
The she wolf lowers her head and sighs loudly, as Lorraine sighs as
well, her eyes rolling up. The Galliard stands and turns to look at the
too-eager Cliath. "Great Glory come from battle in saving Gaia. But
some time hero song sung over battle-pyre. You LISTEN to sister-rhya,
little one when battle come."
"I always listen," he protests. "I do! It's just going to be so much
fun!" He's like an excited puppy.
The wolf growls at him then, her hackles standing on end. "Fun you say?
Is fun to watch pack die at hands of Wyrm-things? Is fun to weep green
ooze from wounds from their teeth and fangs? Falcon's Tempest is young.
Falcon's Tempest not know loss. Falcon's Tempest is fool if think this
be chasing butterflies in summer time."
Jacob gets a submissive pouting look, looking a bit guilty too.
Lorraine just stands up and folds her arms, letting Sings-down-the-moon
handle it.
"Falcon's Tempest LISTEN to rhya's when battle come."
Sings-down-the-moon pads over to the young man and nudges his hand.
"This one not want lose more family so soon."
Jacob immediately sits down and tries to give the wolf a hug. "I'm
sorry....I promise I'll listen."
The wolf tolerates it but looks as indignant as a lupus can at his
actions. "Good. Good."
Lorraine covers her smile with a hand. Apparently Jacob is somewhat
loose on the differences between wolves and dogs....
To Lorraine, the wolf says, "Need speak with Shattered Secrets. Crescent
Moon need speak to spirits for Pack." She chuffs again and says,
"Cliath can let rhya go now." Jacob obeys and goes to get ready, trying
not to seem TOO excited. The Galliard looks up at the Philodox. "Going
to name him Pees-on-self-so-excited."
Lorraine laughs. "Give him a chance, he's just excited at the idea of
doing something active, instead of mediation."
"May wish for meditation when done"
"True," Lorraine admits. "It will be sad to see him lose his innocence,
but it has to come eventually."
"Cannot fight for Gaia and remain so. Not under his moon,"
Sings-the-moon-down points out, looking up at Lorraine. "This one will
do what she can when the battle fury comes to him."
Lorraine smiles sadly. "Thank you. I try not to baby him, but I still
worry about him.""We are pack. Family." The word is odd on her Lupus
tongue. "Stop worry, stop care. Stop care, Harano. This one go now,
Alpha?"
Lorraine nods. "Please send our response to the call. I will inform
our House we go to answer it."
She chuffs in reply, standing and padding to the door. She stops and
looks over her shoulder. "This one travel on...four...feet?"
"Unless there is a moon bridge our choices are to drive or fly. Flying
would subject us to more scrutiny, but it would be faster. Driving
might be more pleasant but will take longer. What is the urgency or
timeframe?" Lorraine asks.
"Call is urgent, Alpha," replies the beta.
"Is there a moon bridge?"
"No, Alpha."
"Are you prepared to fly? Or do you feel it would be too upsetting?"
Lorraine asks quietly.
"This one not afraid of flying machine." She says defiantly
Lorraine smiles. "I know. But I know you do not enjoy being around
large crowds of humans, and their attitudes."
The wolf snorts. "Two-leg nose not so sensitive as four leg. Not smell
AS bad..."
"I'll make the arrangements. I'll make sure we have as much space as is
possible on an airline."
"Not want ride in crate in hold of flying machine."
"That isn't going to happen, that would be undignified for a warrior of
Gaia," Lorraine agrees.
The wolf chuffs, "Not Gnawer of Bone, not pretend to be pet."
"Exactly," Lorraine agrees again.
"This one need..." Sings-the-moon-down lowers her voice "Clothes."
"We'll get you some. And we'll have Mikael dedicate them for you, so
that if you needed to change quickly, you would not lose them. Have you
seen anything you specifically think you'd like or not like?"
"Not like second skins. Not feel right. Not care. Won't like. This one
go now, Alpha?"
Lorraine looks somewhat lost in thought, planning what they might need.
"Yes, thank you."
The wolf chuffs, nods and trots off into the night.
