[The image is dark at first, with blurry moving shapes, until it becomes apparent that small fingers are tapping on the screen and obscuring the light. The hand pulls away and a face zooms in, with large blue eyes inspecting the strange device.]

…Oh?

[The face pulls away, revealing the person on-screen to be a young boy with blond hair. He sets the ( Read more... )

[Shouts and stumbles back, dropping the pokégear. Link had known this strange thing could send voices, but not images. Composes himself and quickly picks it up-for a moment he simply stares blankly at the words on the screen, but then it is suddenly translated into a language he can read.]

'H-hoy. Fine.

[Perry nods on his end.]

Did you locate your Pokeball and Pokemon? [a beat] You're not actually out on Route 29 without your Pokemon are you?

Po...

[Link looks a bit lost. Is he supposed to know what those are? He did hear those words a lot back from people in town, they must be important.]

Oh dear.

Alright um, do you have a red and white ball on you anywhere? It should be provided to you and usually clipped to your belt. That's a pokeball. It contains your partner Pokemon.

[Link nods, then ducks down to fumble through his bag. He'd tossed in the odd dual-colored sphere in the bag and had been about to examine it further when he'd gotten distracted. He holds it in plain view.]

Contains...?

[There's something inside? A partner? Perhaps it's a fairy.]

Yes the sphere there when you enlarge it will release a Pokemon that will act as your help and partner. It is needed to do battle in this place.

[He frowns a bit.] I don't need help to battle.

[However, he tries to figure out what it is he needs to do with this sphere: is that little circle in the center a switch? He tries to open it and]

Ah!

[Something off-screen lets out a low cry. Link is visibly startled and tensed in a defensive position, although he has no weapons.]

That would be your Pokemon. It should obey your commands.

Weapons and doing harm to Pokemon during battles isn't how you fight in this world. It's actually frowned upon unless you're police or something.

[Obey his commands? But that...that doesn't... Well, he'll try.]

Stop.

[Silence for a few moments. The video's just a blur of shaking grass; Link's ignoring the device in his hand in favor of approaching the Lapras. It's docile enough. Then he remembers again, and speaks directly to Perry.]

Battles. [How is he supposed to fight anything without weapons? What and why is he meant to be fighting? This person seems to be the first who knows anything substantial.]

Battles are conducted Pokemon to Pokemon. While it might seem like an unorthodox manner to fight, it is the nature of this world. People rely on Pokemon to help them through life, and Pokemon depend on humanity and their aid as well.

Along your journey, you will meet many Pokemon and many trainers who wish to battle. A trainer, according to the handbook can carry up to six Pokemon at a time before sending extras to the box. I would suggest getting to know your own first before you do any battling with them by giving instructions to them during combat.

[So, these pokemon are simply another type of weapon. Link finds the concept bizarre, but, if these are the area's cultural norms and he has no other means of defense, he must make use of the resources he has. He nods slowly, clearly grateful for the advice.]

Thank you.
