I haven't had a call from Company S.

I've spent a horrifyingly tense, lo-o-o-o-ong day waiting... just waiting, plowing my way through a family size bag of cookies (helpful) and trying not to lose my shit.

One of my references texted me in a tizz that she'd missed a call at 4:30pm. FUCK.

The other called me just after 5 to say that she'd had the call

You can easily counter this with the chronology: she hasn't experienced you in that specific role because she left before you HAD that role. You can explain away her lack of knowledge on that point and maybe even provide other refs to fill in that gap, if need be. If the other things she said are positive, and it sounds as if they were, this doesn't sink the ship.

I know it's far easier said than done, and I'd be stressing out too just because of the circumstances and the waiting and the wanting it so badly, but don't pull your hair out just yet! This should not be a deal-breaker. Dates are facts, and facts are your friends here.

Thank you! It's hard to keep perspective when you're... well, a crazy control freak instant gratification nutbag like me who doesn't deal well with NOT KNOWING things.

Christ, I hope she gives me a chance to explain if she has a problem with it. And not just emails a "we've decided not to go further with your application at this time" escape clause. AUGH.

But, that was late that they were doing the referee calls and they have only done one. Let us hope that the other one convinces them and/or that they give you a chance to address the concerns.
