Does your uni have an independent academic advisor? Ours employs one full-time member of staff who isn't affiliated with any teaching department. It's her job to sort out any problems that students have academically, whether because they've been ill or for other reasons. She'll liase between the student and the departments involved if needed. Maybe you could set up something like that?
We also have a "Fresh Start" programme for students who've left and want to return - we get extra support, our own student mentor, regular "check-up" e-mails, a newsletter, etc.
They're both things I've found essential while I've been at uni.
Definitely campaign for wireless access. I've only just had it in the past month cos we sorted out internet in my house, and now I can't survive without it.
A good idea would be to look at the universities people choose instead of Edge Hill. What attracted them away? Which other universities in the area offer similar courses? What facilities do they offer students?
