For every woman that would do well to learn to be more assertive and confident, there's a man who needs to learn to be more polite, tactful and less overbearing (and sometimes the other way around).
Fortunately enough, I don't think I'm anywhere near overbearing in person, I'm actually quite quiet and reserved but I've certainly found that online discussions go better for me when I take a second look at what I've written and try to find ways to make it sound a little softer or more tactful.
When that doesn't work it's typically someone (usually a man but not always) who isn't willing to discuss it in civil terms at which point I've become more and more inclined to stop contributing. I don't see why they should be allowed to set the tone of debate and expect everyone to play along. Just unfortunate that it's not so easy to 'opt out' in a work environment :oP
