"The first question. The oldest question. Hidden in plain sight"

Doctor, who?

Moffat has been playing a lot with the whole 'who is The Doctor?' (or, more specifically, 'what is the Doctor's name?') thing.

It's probably the oldest question in the series, albeit not the oldest question in the whoverse.

Still not sure why The Silence care that much though.

Names carry power. Remember the Carrionites, the witches from the Shakespeare episode?

Well, there's some evidence they do in the Whoverse anyway.

I'd disregard the carrionites given that it was a singular episode (and not one of Moffats) but Moffat has been amping up the importance of The Doctor's name, so there's presumably something in it.

Exactly what form that will take I'm not sure though. I'd hope for something more sophisticated than the Shakespeare episode in any case; that was okay for a one-off episode but if we're going to have a story arch that's gone on this long (since Silence in the Library really) then I want something a bit more.

She did say 'jodhpurs'. We'd already seen her check out her face, hair and boobs ("It's all going on down there!") and she went back to the bathroom 'to check something' it's clear that she was looking at her bum.

I have to admit that I wasn't familiar with the term, which is why the best I could work out was 'jumpers' (leaving me straining to work out why jumpers are suddenly so risqué) :oP

I agree, though the BBC America closed captioning did say "jumpers".

Also, I'm hoping that the reason for Mels being black was so Paterson Joseph would be accepted as Twelve. :D

Paterson Joseph would make a brilliant Doctor. :oD

I would like to see a more insulting and hard Doctor and I think he'd do well portraying a Doctor in the vein of the Marquis De Carabas. :o)

I'm guessing the thinking behind a black Melody (as she was called then) was that Amy and Rory wouldn't even guess about being her parents or even related, or at least maybe confuse the audience in that way? If they looked to much like the River Song we know then it wouldn't be much of a surprise.

As for the dress size thing, it would've been good if she'd said something about not being big enough, so instead of thinking of being small like most people would assume she's hoping to be larger.

It does work well in that regard, agreed. Although in hindsight there's no reason why it's any more unlikely, a lot of people might be blind-sighted by the ethnicity.

I admittedly did not see it coming myself, although I should have done given that she made a very River Song entrance (in fact, I'd assumed that it would be River Song before she got out of the car).

And, yeah, if the dress size thing was about wanting to be bigger then that would have avoided a lot of the issues. No indication that was the case and I suspect it was not what Moffat was thinking about either.

It was nice that she said she liked being more 'mature' though. Too many of the Doctor's companions/friends have been daft, naive things in their teens/early 20s - e.g. Rose was meant to be 19, Martha had just left medical school so would have been 23, and Amy is supposed to be what, 21? Mickey was a daft kid too. The only more mature one was Donna. So it's nice that not only does River present as older, she actually enjoys looking like an adult woman - even if she doesn't behave like it!
