So after making the distraught post over how my best friends have vanished, God saw fit to smack me in the face for being such a whiny pansy by dashing all my expectations about how awful school would be. Four classes this semester. Initial impressions.
Molecular Biochemistry I:
Boring as heck, just like every other core biology class I've ever taken. I'm in science for the labs, really. I want to go run gels. Why are you making me memorize the differences between phosphodiesters and diphosphoesters those aren't even real words hey I bet you just made them up. Professor seems a bit irritating, but it could just be his general European accent that makes him sound a bit snobby. Very no nonsense (again, like all other biology classes); we launched straight into two hours of biochemistry after a 5 minute run through of the syllabus. Grading scale is very harsh, as expected of a core biology class. Two good friends here in my fobby circles who appeared out of nowhere which makes me happy.
Human Physiology:
The class seems interesting. Despite the groans over the announcements that we need to know anatomy, I actually thought the stuff was pretty cool. It's pretty much biochemistry applied to our bodies, which is much more interesting than talking about Gibb's Free Energy and entropy and diphosphoetherthiolsulfates; we went over ion channels and nerve cells the first day. Professor is very . . . chill. He's fairly young and likes to crack jokes in a monotone and pretend he doesn't hear us laughing. This is the only class I have no friends in, which needs to change.
Drugs, Society, and Behavior:
The professor is everything I would want from a grandfather. He's 73 years old and he spent the first half-hour of class telling us how much he likes teaching and how much he's going to enjoy having us. He spent the next half-hour warning us about H1N1 and giving us generalized tips on 'how to stay alive'; we're not allowed to come to class if we so much as cough, both because he wants us to get well and because he doesn't want to die from the flu. There was no reason whatsoever why we should have to work so hard on our first day, so let's watch a movie! It was Traffic, which is actually a really good movie about the impact of drugs on our society without being preachy. Grading is a bit harsher than I expected. Three floormates from last year; none of us had planned this out beforehand and we were pleasantly surprised to be reuinted.
Social Psychology:
Why are all psych professors so awesome? I'm seriously considering going into psych once I've gotten into grad school, since I've highly enjoyed every class I've taken. Anyway, this guy had to be seen to be believed; he pulled this weird trick by spending twenty minutes discussing random things with us, then turning around and showing us how the entire discussion looked through the lens of social psychology, knowledge of people and how they behave. Something like that. He also invited us all to have lunch with him in groups of seven. The subject material should be helpful; it's supposed to be help us understand why we behave the way we do around others, which should hopefully help us ace an interview or make friends more easily. A girl I was good friends with in freshman year who vanished sophomore year and a guy who went to high school with me is in this class.
