Dear Ray,
Diefenbaker wishes me to convey our his feelings of affection for the numerous varieties of junk food which you supply you on this traditional day of loving remembrance. (side note: I myself wonder if the Saint Valentines - as I am sure you are aware, Ray, the particular appelation comes from Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni, both martyred Christian saints circa 200 A.D. - would entirely approve of the blatantly commercial and materialistic bent of the modern holiday... but I digress.)
Diefenbaker would also like to express his regrets that the greeting-card industry has failed, in this instance, to adequately provide for lupines. As you can see, he was quite insistent that I cross out "The Dog" in the closing so that he could sign the card properly.
He also desired to send you an authentic Inuvik pizza as a small token of his esteem, but alas, the local pizzeria seems to be suffering a shortage of blubber and lichen. (Yes, that is a joke.)
Fortunately, Constable Turnbull's (no, I was not aware that Constable Renfield Turnbull was a twin - I do believe she is the tallest woman of my acquaintance) young daughter, Lucy, was able to appease Diefenbaker with an assortment of festive stickers with which to personalize this card for you.
In addition, he (rather impertinently, in my opinion) demands that I inquire as to when you will visit as we he misses you terribly dreadfully every minute of each day very much. Our cabin is small and not at all luxurious, but you are more than welcome to come and stay for ever as long as you would like.
Finally, Dief asked that I include a brief message for your turtle, Speedy, but I am afraid I failed in deaf-half-wolf translation; something about a "clue bus" - but that is nonsensical, perhaps he meant "blue bus" instead? Oh, and "one is the loneliest number" as I know all too well which, no doubt, results from Constable Turnbull's (the elder) fondness for listening to the radio while on duty.
If I might be permitted to add a few sentiments lines of my own, I wish that I was there with you you the most genial of holidays, with a reminder that roses have thorns, sometimes hidden too much candy can be detrimental to your teeth.
Be happy well, Ray.
Love,
Fondly,
Yours,
Sincerely,
Benton Fraser
