Have taken to making lists for standard checkpoints - bedtime, going out time, etc, and taken to routinely (obsessively? but it isn't obsessive if you really forget, is it?) checking things - door locked, stove turned off (don't ask), yes, I fixed up the coffee before I sat down, but did I actually turn it on? sort of things.
The down side is that one has to remember to check the $^(*^%(*^%$ list!! The up side is, that you can teach an old dog new tricks, it just takes longer, and these days I do the things and check the list for confirmation. It's just a way of forming a habit more gradually.
And I still forget things at times - left our storage cage unlocked last week, but was fortunate (and there wasn't anything as attractive as a bike it it, and it's out of the way.) So I've got to work on that, too.

I think it might be a good idea to buy a bright lock and put it in a basket in front of my bike (that is, in my eye sight) instead of in my saddlebags (where it is out of side).
