I just finished a play. One that every person in the world should read.
The Crucible is a play by Arthur Miller about the Witch trials that occurred in 1692 Salem. 19 people died, and hundreds were put in jail.
This is a true story. It follows the story of the people in Salem at that time, and shows the hysteria and fear that was used to control this town by a number of ruthless, conniving and cruel people.
Oh boy is this an awesome play. Its words are poetry to the ear, and Miller uses language to portray in 4 short acts the emotions, discourses and the people themselves better than any writer could do in so short a time.
The play is about the power of fear, and what that matched with mass hysteria can do to a community. It was written in the time of the Cold War, the late 1950's and it can be counted as a metaphor for the Communist hunt of America. McCarthyism and all that stuff. If you don't know about that, LOOK IT UP. You need to know.
This book links so well with todays society. I'll give you an example. In the book, the a man named Danforth says "You are either with this court or against it. There is no middle road." In the 1950's, you were either completely against Communism, or a Communist and damned because of it. Now, lets look at todays society. The Australian government has said that you are either on their side, or with the Terrorists. So if I oppose the war in Iraq, I'm a terrorist.
What the hell?? When did our world become black and white? When did we have to pick sides, because if we don't we're immediately against them? Our society is going around and around in circles of the same things. IT MAKES ME SICK.
Politicians should have to do History before they go into politics. Then maybe we would not make the same mistakes all over again.
Oh yeah.
George Bush and John Howard? Read The Crucible. NOW.
Question: Are you sided, or do you walk the road between?
