i tried something different this year, i wondered if any of the british papers might be interested in a return to an older tradition of editorial cartooning ( Read more... )

thankyou kind sir. they were indeed fun, and i've always loved this type of cartoon. it's just a bit of a shame there aren't many outlets for them any more.

These are nice. I would publish them if I ever got my shit together ... btw, we have a new production guy for BAM 2. I am taking a back seat with the project. It will come out eventually.

thankyou kind sir, and good to hear BAM2's still happening -- that squirrel bros story feels like a looooong time ago now!

Having received yet another Giles collection for christmas (is it just me, or does the family of every other cartoonist think that a Giles collection is the perfect gift, year after year...?) and I can safely say that yours are a cut above - and not just because I actually get the jokes..

seriously though... i'm not sure i'm fit to scrape the sh*t off the great man's shoes! but it's very kind of you to say so.

and btw no i haven't got or been given a new giles annual for many years. not since he died really. i do love his stuff though. not the central jokes so much, but the observation, the drawing, the little sight gags peppered around in the background...

They're lovely, WilBur! I guess cartoons are subject to fashion, same as everything else.

Keep trying, Wilbur - these are fantastic! Your style fits beautifully with this kind of format, and successfully marries a contemporary look to a very traditional type of editorial cartoon that only few ever truly mastered (Lordy - I'm sounding like an art critic - let's nip that in the bud).

Whoever has knocked you back on this is a twerp - someone is bound to see the value you're offering eventually. My only concern would be that they'll never pay you enough for this level of detail. Great gags, wonderful drawings!

massive thanks for that, steve!
to be honest, i'd pretty much given up on this idea... i tried, and no-one was interested...
but now you're making me think maybe i should persevere.

one problem is actually getting stuff seen by the right person -- i tried my best, but it's not always easy to tell whether something has landed on the right desk or not -- especially when you don't get a reply at all.

the other problem with 'keeping trying' is that these things, as you point out, take a lot of work, and to produce a fresh batch of them would be a big effort. whilst if i tried hawking these ones around again, they're going to look out of date.

really appreciate your enthusiasm though, and if you have any ideas how i could overcome any of these problems, i'm listening. :)

Getting to the right person is almost impossible to be certain of, even assuming you know who that might be. I've always taken the view that going straight to the Editor rather than any of his/her deputies can only be a good thing, since the3y will be the ultimate arbiters of whether you get in their publication or not. But I'll often approach the appropriate deputy as well, though with the big publications, I'm never too sure who that should be - features editor or (for editorial cartoons) news editor? Maybe all three simultaneously. I've had success and failure with all three ( ... )

steve, you've inspired me to give it another shot with these -- at least with places i didn't get a reply from.

that's exactly the problem -- never being quite sure who to send stuff to. but i guess you're right, may as well try ALL the options...

thanks again.
