The entire piece was gripping and really excellent. Really liked this

or maybe an old bird, trapped in the wrong place and lonely beyond caring.

As in a tough old bird. And really what Ennis himself eventually became.

There are too many beautiful things I could say about this story and not enough time.

What a very poingnant story. Lots of power in your words. Maybe gives us a better understanding of how Ennis became what he became! Thanks,

Ted

Thanks for that, Ted. For once, the story wasn't a pleasure to write but I'm glad I did it.

I have read this before, I have a copy, and thought it was excellent writing. It is a miracle that Ennis grew up as good as he did, there is another story about Rich and Earl, Roots, terrific story about how blind hate can destroy, Land,
Beast and Man.
Thank you,
Torry

Thank you very much, and I'll chase up the other story. Earl and Rich are intriguing in the original story. And I love your avatar!

and brutal.... but wonderful writing and great vignettes: ennis so happy he stands on his horse, the oanes of glass (and later, shattered), the sheep clouds in the cerulean sky.... i could go on and on.

and to think that KE's statement pitched to his dad could have triggered earl's death! wow.

the last paragraph is pretty much mind blowing too... so sad to think rich might still be there, devastated from his loss.

Thank you, Jimmy. It's been years since I read this story. It's not too bad, is it. The standing on the horse was something Ned Kelly used to do. I liked the image. I can't recall where the idea of the glass came from - I might use it again somewhere else :)
