THE ONE

A canon drabble.

Ennissssssss!

Hiss in through the gaps, past the shirts, ruffle the heavy fringe on the cheap old bedspread, swirl around his face, brow puckered even in sleep, caress his cheek, lie soft on heavy eyelids.

Stir his curls, as did the sigh of a lover long ago.

He doesn't move, caught so deep in dreamless sleep.

Clatter a plastic jar from off the dishrack, shake the Venetian blind, tap the cord against the window frame. Now he shifts, smiles, "Jack," he sighs, and I take in his essence, flood him with my own. "Jack!" he sighs, and I am in his dreams once more.

I will draw him back through memory, warm his heart, sing to him of times of happiness, lie with him throughout the night.

I will gently rock his trailer as a mother rocks a cradle, I will breathe dusty life into old, worn-out shirts, I will whisper softly into his ear, "It could be bad out there. Be careful, my darling, take care."

And I will wait for him, be with him always, my beloved, my only love, the other half of my soul. I will be that ceaseless moaning across the prairie, a soughing through the pines, the echoing lonesome howl on distant snowy peaks. I will wait until his time is come, catch up his last breath, mingle it with my own, and once again we two will be together, two in one, as we were always meant to be. Always and ever.

One.
