I think that OS Ennis was reacting to his own feelings of fear and shame when he let fly at Jack. He had nothing to counterbalance them until he discovered what life without Jack actually meant. Jack's death (or near-death in this case) had to be a change-causing thing.

This chapter just blew me away COMPLETELY like all the others have. I CANNOT love this story any more than I do. It's just so totally realistic. The talking done in this chapter had me GRIPPED...Jesus! What a chapter... Jack revealing the truth of his past...to Ennis... Oh. My. God. These lines here...whew ( ... )

you cannot the believe the speed with which I rush to your work

the bookends of Jack's loveleless childhood as implied by his awful father, with the recounting of his loveless sex life to his caretaker lover was poignant

and said to an Ennis who listens and doesn't get it in the sense of understanding how it played out like that for Jack, because he is just wired in a completely different way, but who gets it in a way that he can see Jack for who he is, love him, and move on

Just wonderful - I'm breathless

thank you

Ellen

Ellen, thanks so much for this comment. It started me thinking about how desolate OS Jack's whole life was, in never being able to share his love. Ouch. No wonder he clung to the Dozy Embrace.

This was a good chapter. I'm glad that Jack and Ennis finally talked about Jack's past, and that they seem to have gotten past it now. But I am worried about the Old Man, he's not to be trusted because he can still make a lot of problems in a lot of ways. Worst of all, he's suspicious of Ennis now.

He is definitely not to be trusted. He's a great character to write about.
