I'd disagree with calling Steampunk a subculture... I'd say that it's a sub-subculture as it really doesn't have enough representation to call it a subculture.

oh, that sounds like a lot of fun! looking forward to reading? (hearing?) your impressions. are you posting it here? might make a neat podcast if you've good enough content.

some bands i'd consider steampunk-y: oneiroid psychosis, gothic archies, les joyaux de la princesse, the caretaker, brian eno, coil (specifically the ANS album, recorded on the ANS synthesizer - now that's fucking steampunk!), there's plenty of neo-folk/martial industrial bands that might fit the bill too.... and of course, kate bush - cloudbusting, yes? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRHA9W-zExQ

(Are you in Second Life at all? There's a thriving set of Steamlands there to explore... *grins*)

*blink* Okay, that's a woman with a lot to say... I spent a half hour wandering her blog and even when I used the tag-search I got Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and SecondLife *blink* I found little tiny bits here and there about steampunkish bands or music.
And no, I'm not on SecondLife. I don't have that much time to devote in front of my PC *chuckle* It has tempted me from time to time but I tend not to be a joiner...
