Really. I was seriously considering doing one of those summer-english-teaching-in-a-developing-country things next year. China seems the obvious choice.

Wait...ignore the 'new' to LJ thing. Misread the userinfo...am giddy (just had coffee with friends) and probably half blind. Sorry.

Hi Xiao Yi...

I thought I'd at least say 'hi' even if I couldn't say anything else:)

omg! you sound like you're having so much fun...wheras I've been reduced to telling science jokes and trivia to resolve my boredom.

Hi Nilru (or Mildred...:) )

There is nothing wrong with science jokes...in fact, there is nothing wrong with geeky academic-discipline-oriented jokes in general. I've reconciled with the fact that I love economics and philosophy jokes a while ago now...

Enjoying your mid-sems?

If you do take the trans-Siberian express from Moscow to Beijing, may I come? I've lately added an obsession with China to my obsession with Russia.

It's really quite a shame that I speak neither language, have no resistance to extreme cold, and am not a Communist.

I can only attribute it to my ongoing fixation on fur hats and men with interesting noses. And dumplings.

I am seriously considering doing the trans-siberian rail thing the coming christmas, easter or summer break and it would be just fabulous if you want to come!

(PS - Obsession with China? Since when? This is from someone who once said that she does not find most of Asia interesting in any way whatsoever...)

Ooh dumplings. I miss them so much...my dad makes the best ones, you see...oh well, not long now...

By the way, go on www.facebook.com and get an account. It's a good way to stay in touch and an excellent source of procrastination.

Suffice it to say, I have learned the errors of my non-Asia appreciating ways. Yum cha, peking duck & dumplings, Shanghai, cheap clothes, pragmatic population and pirated goods, snippets of evil tonal Mandarin - poetic proverbs that I attempt to repeat (and in so doing send Aly into fits of laughter) such as a phrase to describe a power couple that loosely translates as "dragon phoenix pair" and that I somehow garbled into "dirty wind crispy aunt".

what's not to love?

I'm heading to China & Europe this Christmas break - when you get here, we should talk more about the trans-siberian rail. Though once again am cautious about the idea of crossing snowy tundras in December-January.

I wish I could travel back in time to Shanghai in the 20s, when it was under colonial rule, even though it was meant to be a shameful chapter of out history and all. But lately I think I am starting to appreciate China a little more too. I guess it's because when you are a little older you no longer automatically associate China with hordes of relatives but instead begin to be interested in the country itself.

Even I do not know how exactly one would say 'dirty wind crispy aunt' in mandarin, so well done.

I think I am heading to Australia this Christmas, as I probably won't come back next summer...but I'm sure there will be times when we are both in Europe. Hopefully. Anyway, I'll see you soon and then we can come up with a Plan.
