Rain, rain, go away... my roof can't handle it!

The fucking roof is leaking! All this damn rain....We've noticed once or twice recently that when it rains hard, there's a spot on the ceiling in the kitchen that'll leak a drop or two. Aaron's dad attempted to patch it on the outside with some joint compound or something this past weekend. This morning, I was awakened at 330 by an insistent PING ( Read more... )

So I guess Michael and I should consider getting one of those newfangled post 1950 apartments when we get out there?

You know, the part of the house that was built in the 20's has a peaked slate roof, with the perfectly dry attic under it. I think the kitchen was an addition, probably in the 60's actually, and its roof is totally flat, so water just sits on it. It's not the age, it's the utterly moronic design.

No place is perfect; I love the charm of these old houses, but newer is probably better.

Oh, no!

I so sympathize with you! There are few things worse than waking up in the middle of the night to a leak while it's raining.

I'm so glad that nothing's been ruined, but the sound of wet, runny joint compound and water mixed sounds really, really icky!

I hope the repairs go swiftly and are done right.

It is really icky; when the water dries, it leaves a white residue that does not scrub off well.

Thanks, I hope so too!

URGH! I'm so sorry.

We're having to deal with the aftermath of the roofing. There's this tarry silt residue everywhere. Everything in the garage is coated with it, not to mention the slate patio and our deck ... oh, and it crept through the wood beams on our bedroom ceiling. It sticky!

I feel your pain, but the good news is that it looks amazing when it's finished and I know it's safe! The old roof was wood tiles and a fire hazard. California no longer allows for that sort of shake roofing material to be used -- only synthetic.
